Tours / In the heart of Umbria: Orvieto and Assisi

The day we have organised will take you on a discovery tour of Umbria, starting in the direction of the beautiful medieval town of Orvieto, which stands on a volcanic tuff rock, and then on to the sacred city of Assisi.

Orvieto is a medieval Umbrian town characterised by its location, in fact it stands on a tuff rock, a volcanic rock very common in central and southern Italy.
The symbol of the city is the magnificent Duomo, an example of fusion and mixture of Gothic and Romanesque styles.
Its façade features a numerous series of mosaics, narrating the history and scenes from the life of the Virgin, from the Assumption into heaven, to the Nativity of the Virgin, to the Coronation of the Virgin.
Another of the wonders in the village is St Patrick's Well, commissioned by the Pope of the time, Clement VII, which was intended to serve as a water supply in the event of an attack on the city.
The work of architect Antonio da San Gallo the Younger, the engineering masterpiece is inspired by the spiral staircase of the Villa del Belvedere in the Vatican, and is designed so that the ways down and up never meet.
During your visit to Orvieto, you will have the opportunity to walk along winding streets, admire medieval squares and palaces and stop in small craft shops to buy some souvenirs.

The itinerary then continues in the direction of the religious and ecclesiastical city of Assisi.

Known the world over as the birthplace of St Francis, Assisi also stands on a hillside, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Umbrian valley.
Our guide will take you inside the Basilica to admire Giotto's frescoes depicting the story of the patron saint's life, telling you anecdotes related to the pilgrimage of believers and followers of the Franciscans.
Next you will visit the Basilica of St Clare, dedicated to St Clare of Assisi, who is also devoted to St Francis.
We will leave you some free time to explore the streets and mystical atmosphere of this city on your own.

At the end of the day, a visit to the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the birthplace of the Franciscan Order.
