It is considered one of the most famous Italian gardens in the world, if not the most famous. It looks almost like an open-air museum, and represents a real fusion of nature, art and history.
The green area of the garden covers about 45,000 square meters and its construction dates back to between 1500 and 1800, by the wealthy patron of the Medici family, with the intention of creating a grand-ducal garden for the historic residence of Palazzo Pitti.
Adorning the splendid Boboli Gardens are sculptures dating back to ancient Roman times, along with more recent works of art from the twentieth century.
In addition to the sculptures in the garden, there are small ponds with water lilies, decorative fountains, caves and buildings full of history. For example, the baroque Kaffeehaus; a sort of modern pavilion built by Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena in about 1776, used as a coffee room for the members of the court, following the fashion of the time period. The rococo-style construction allows visitors to enjoy an extraordinary view of Florence.
According to the papers found, the first architect of this park was Niccolò Tribolo, who was also hired by the Medici family for the gardens of the Medici Villa in Castello.
Over the years many designers worked carefully on the garden, giving it a shape similar to a triangle with two almost perpendicular paths that join near the Fountain of Neptune. This part of the park was inaugurated in 1637 with the coronation of the Grand Duchess of Tuscany Vittoria della Rovere, wife of Ferdinando II De 'Medici.
Another important historical element within the garden is the amphitheater, with an ornamental Egyptian obelisk that indicates the point where the Boboli hill was excavated to extract the "pietraforte" used to build Palazzo Pitti.
