Florence is a romantic city wherever you look at it. Every corner inspires delicacy. It’s a dream to see sunsets near the river Arno, whilst the sun is going down slowly and stains every building with its golden glow, and gradually the street lights light up to give way to a magic show. The Ponte Vecchio is fantastic! The jewellery you can see are so beautiful that they seem unreal. It’s an unforgettable city.
At the corner of Piazza Santissima Annunziata and Via dei Servi is Palazzo Grifoni.
At first glance and for those who do not know the history, it may seem just another of the many palaces that there are in Florence; but this palace hides one of the most beautiful love stories of this city, on the facade of this building there is a particular aspect: a window which is always open.
A Florentine legend says that towards the end of 1500, a descendant of the Grifoni family entered the war. His wife ran to the window to say goodbye one last time before the trip and she did not move from there for the rest of her life. She always looked forward to her husband’s return; but he never came back and when the woman died the window was closed.
There are two versions of what happened next. The first says that the neighbors, moved by the deep love story, have promised to always leave the window open so that, in a certain sense, this love will never end.
The second, however, claims that when they closed the window, the furniture started to shake and all the objects that were inside the room flew away. But everything calmed down when the window was reopened.
Both have something in common, the love between two people lasts and is as strong as the two people want and are willing to love the other person.
