It is with the advent of the Middle Ages that Matera reached its maximum splendor, with the construction of the characteristic "Sassi" that dominate the landscape. These ancient rock dwellings, dug into the tuff walls, represent an extraordinary example of architecture and adaptation of human beings to the natural environment.
Our tour takes us through a panoramic walk inside the labyrinthine alleys of the Sassi, where the ancient houses set in the rock and the narrow streets will transport us back in time. We will admire the houses carved into the rock, which date back to more than 9,000 years ago, and we will discover how the local population lived for centuries, exactly until 1952. In that year the rocks were closed for public hygiene reasons and the local population was forced to live in homes compliant with the new urban planning laws.
Obviously we will not miss the Rock Church of San Pietro Barisano, built inside a cave, which preserves medieval frescoes and decorations.
After the visit to the churches, we will take a short panoramic walk along the city's ramparts, from where we will be able to enjoy a spectacular view of the Sassi and the surrounding countryside. We will have the opportunity to take breathtaking photos and admire the timeless beauty of Matera.
Our tour to Matera offers a complete and immersive experience through this mysterious city with our local guides, who, by drawing attention to detail, will guarantee you an authentic and engaging experience. A tour that will leave you breathless.
