You will immediately feel the awareness of peace and well-being that emanates this city. Take in the time in order to admire its landscapes, hills and olive trees! During the 2 hours of pure walking, you will discover this historic city of art and tradition. Together, we will head towards the main square of the city, Piazza del Comune. In this square, we will see one of the best-preserved Roman temples in Italy, the Temple of Minerva, which dates to the late Republican period (1st century BC). The temple is surrounded by medieval government buildings and the remains of an ancient forum, a Roman amphitheater, and Roman ramparts.
After, we will observe the view of the medieval castle of Rocca Maggiore. Immediately following, we will head towards the famous Basilica of San Francesco, the first Gothic architecture in Umbria to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The meaning of the church will then be explained, as well as all the frescoes it contains. Frescoes dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, by artists known in the Middle Ages such as: Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti. As surprising as it may be, the basilica is formed by the amalgamation of two superimposed churches: one dating back to 1228 in Umbrian Romanesque style, which was built in the rock of the hill, and the other erected on its slopes, in Italian Gothic style with a simple "gabled" facade.
Later we will arrive at the Basilica of Santa Chiara, another important place of worship in the city of Assisi.
The basilica houses a 12th century crucifix and was built to house the tomb of the Saint, founder of the Order of the Poor Clares and disciple of Saint Francis.
