Tours / Rome: Catacombs, Appian Way, Eur

On the Ancient Appian way, outside the San Sebastian Gate and the ancient city Aurelian Walls, we reach the San Sebastian Catacombs (underground cemeteries used by the early Christians).

The visit inside the Catacombs lasts approximately 1 hour.

Our tour begins on the cobblestone streets of the Ancient Appian way, where we can admire the ruins of the Circus of Maxentius and the Tomb of Cecilia Metella. Back towards the ancient Aurelian walls and following them in a southern direction until reaching St. Paul’s Gate and the Via Ostiense, we can admire the Cestia Pyramid of the I Century B.C.. The structure, also known as the Mausoleum of the Consol Caius Cestius, was built with blocks of Carrara marble. Continuing along outside the ancient city Aurelian's walls, on the Via Ostiense we reach the Basilica of St. Paul (San Paolo Fuori le Mura), the largest one in Rome besides St. Peter’s in the Vatican. It was built where Saint Paul was buried and it was majorly rebuilt in the 19th Century after a big fire. Continuing south on the Christopher Columbus way, we reach the modern district of the EUR with its architecture typical of the Fascist period.

Here we find evidence of the Palace of Civility of Work, the Congress Palace and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, with the second highest Dome of Rome.
