Legend has it that it was founded by the sons of Remo, Seno and Aschio, and it is for this reason that the symbol of the Capitoline she-wolf is found throughout the city. It is one of the most famous cities in Tuscany, but compared to Pisa and Florence, it has kept its authentic medieval appearance intact.
The layout of the city was defined by very specific laws in the early 13th century and since then all the buildings have been built respecting the same rules. This allows you to get in touch with the historical uniqueness of this city and to go back in time walking through the narrow streets of the districts, among the buildings in "tower stone", sandstone, bricks, travertine and marble from the Montagnola Senese.
Definitely the Piazza del Campo, with its characteristic shell shape unique in the world, which amazes for its inclination towards the valley and is divided into 9 segments, symbol of the Government of the 9. The square was born at the time of the majestic Palazzo Pubblico, wanted as government seat by the latter, and became the hub of social and commercial activity in the city. The Torre del Mangia stands out on the square with its 88 meters of height. And we will certainly not miss the romantic Fonte Gaia, the fountain located on the side of the square, an example of Renaissance sculpture.
The traditional horse race called Palio takes place around the Piazza del Campo, twice a year in the summer: an event that the citizens of Siena eagerly await and for which they prepare throughout the winter, singing historical hymns and songs.
The imposing Cathedral, one of the most beautiful in Italy, stands on one of the hills of origin of the city and is characterized by a Gothic architecture with white marble, green serpentine marble from Prato and some details in red marble from Siena. The decorations are of a breathtaking finesse and although it is only a part of the original project, it totally expresses the richness of the city.
Historically it was a rich and powerful city, thanks to the Via Francigena which led to the birth of the first bank in the world, Banca Monte dei Paschi, which is still active today. Siena asserted its independence several times throughout history, opposing the city of Florence in multiple wars during the 13th century.
And yet alleys, narrow streets, ancient palaces, the districts of the Palio and the many shops of the typical sweets of Siena: panforte, ricciarelli, cavallucci.
