Tours / Sistine Chapel & Vatican Museums

The tour of the Vatican Museums immediately dazzles all who embark on it.

From the moment you walk through the doors you are transported to another place, another time. As you gaze up at the gigantic spiral staircase created in 1832 by Giuseppe Momo sheer amazement enters your body. Upon reaching the summit of the staircase you are met by the legendary Raphael rooms which take you back to the Renaissance Era and contain multiple frescoes created by Michelangelo as well as Raphael.

Continuing along with the tour you are taken to the Gregorian Egyptian portion of the museums which was founded by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839 contain many artifacts and even a real mummy. One of the most noteworthy sites within the museums is the portion about the portraits of the popes and the “pope mobiles” that were in use throughout history. This is one of the newer museums as it was founded in 1973. Those on the tour are able to see portraits of the popes as well as the horses, carriages, and cars with their panoramic cages to transport the popes.

There are several other museums that all have their own attractions and draws to them; however, once you walk through the Sistine Chapel everything seems dull in comparison. The artwork done by Michelangelo is simply breathtaking and then when put in combination with the atmosphere within the Chapel it is an experience like no other. Looking up at the ceiling your eyes wander from magnificent piece to magnificent piece, but the wandering stops as soon as your eyes gaze upon the “Creation of Adam” painting. The sheer beauty of seeing this astounding piece should be a bucket list item for everyone. The amazement continues when you realize the time period that painting was done in and how well it has held up through the centuries.

After experiencing the Sistine Chapel, you may continue your walk through the beautiful Vatican Museums, inside which we will find magnificent masterpieces such as the Laocoonte group, the deposition of the Cross by Caravaggio and the Saint Jerome by Leonardo da Vinci.
