From the emperor Hadrian as a funeral mausoleum for his family, the structure is inspired by the mausoleum of Augustus, although with far greater dimensions.
During the Middle Ages it became a papal fortress. The Castle is connected to the Vatican by the famous Passetto, wanted by Pope Niccolò III who decided to transfer the apostolic see, to have a secure connection between the castle and St. Peter's Basilica.
