We will pass the medieval walls, cross the mysterious and silent alleys and reach the Basilica of San Domenico and the sanctuary house of Santa Caterina da Siena.These houses have saved the memories of the Patron Saint of Italy and this is only the beginning of a most memorable trip!

Santa Caterina is a historic character, a woman who challenged popes and emperors. Her charisma and energy still live in the heart of the Sienese people that twice a year compete in the famous horse races, held every July 2 and August 16- the Palio.
Furthermore, we will visit the most important places of the district, Piazza del Campo, with its unique shape of seashell, surrounded by numerous palaces. Its pattern is interrupted by the height of Torre del Mangia and is complete with the elegant Gothic Siena Cathedral. It is alternatively made of local white and green marble and art works that carry the signature of Donatello, Michelangelo, Pinturicchio, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Beccafumi, and Bernini. Then, we will start feeling hungry, so we will continue among vineyards and olive groves between barrels and we will enjoy delicious meats and cheeses accompanied by glasses filled with Vernaccia and Chianti.

The Via Francigena unites with Siena Monteriggioni, which "towers crowns his walls" (cit. Dante Alighieri ’’di torri si corona’’), and San Gimignano, the home of the prestigious Vernaccia saffron crocus wine. San Gimignano is one of the best examples in Europe of urban organization of the communal age, still preserving 14 towers, the walls and the town hall, which dominates the entire valley. This cosy village, with small squares and medieval houses hosts also the winner of the World Championship of Gelato.

So, during the promenade in San Gimignano it will be of course gelato time!
